Fractora

*Individual results may vary

As much as we try to avoid it, we all experience the cosmetic effects of aging. Because everyone shows signs of age in their own time and at their own pace, it is important to us that we have multiple modalities at our fingertips to meet each person where they’re at. We are pleased to offer Fractora fractional skin resurfacing using innovative radio frequency technology to patients of our Hauppauge, NY officeDr. Mark Epstein is proud to offer this service for those looking to approve their appearance.

What is Fractora?

Fractora is a non-surgical treatment developed to rejuvenate the skin without imposing significant downtime for recovery. This system works beneath the skin to promote consistent collagen production, thus anti-aging from the inside-out.

Who is a candidate for fractional skin resurfacing?

Fractora is an excellent treatment option for adults of all ages and skin types. If you are interested in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, acne scars, or other dermatologic irregularities, schedule your consultation with our team to see if Fractora is right for you.

How does Fractora work?

Fractora is a cutting-edge treatment that takes radio frequency to a whole new level. The process provokes collagen remodeling by delivering radio frequency into the skin through “pin-based” technology. Historically, radiofrequency treatments have been conducted via direct contact with the epidermis. Fractora goes deeper via microfine needle-points that penetrate the skin at varying depths based on the desired outcome of treatment.

The tiny pins that deliver radiofrequency into the skin generate mild heat in the subdermal layer, where collagen fibers provide a scaffold for superficial tissue. The heating of existing collagen fibers causes them to contract, tightening the skin. Additionally, fibroblast cells are stimulated by the controlled heat and the creation of micro-wounds in the uppermost layers of the skin. Their increased action floods the collagen matrix with more of this vital protein, leading to ongoing cosmetic improvement.

What can Fractora treat/correct?

Fractora is designed to rejuvenate the skin in more ways than one. Multiple concerns can be treated simultaneously. Some of the common areas of treatment include the neck, skin around the lips, cheeks, smile lines, lower and upper eyelids, and forehead. Some of the common concerns that can improve with Fractora resurfacing include:

  • Visible blood vessels
  • Pigmentation concerns
  • Acne scars and other scarring
  • Tone and textural irregularities
  • Effects of sun damage
  • Lines and wrinkles on the face and neck

Every Fractora treatment is customized to treat relevant concerns. This is made possible by the adjustable size and depth of the tips used to carefully puncture the skin.

What are the benefits of Fractora treatment?

Radio frequency energy has been scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, spots, and hyperpigmentation. Being fractionated, Fractora enhances the effects of energy deposits by creating a matrix of micro-injuries at varying depths in the skin. In between the tiny pin-pricks is completely intact tissue. This minimally-invasive technique promotes rapid healing without diminishing the results of treatment.

The majority of repair occurs beneath the skin because surface disruption is minimal. This is gentler than popular technologies such as CO2 skin resurfacing and Fraxel, but still appropriate for the treatment of deeper lines and creases.

Is fractional skin resurfacing painful?

Patient comfort is a priority to us. Fractora treatment may be conducted after the skin has been desensitized with a topical anesthetic cream. This technique diminishes sensation on the skin’s surface to a point where most patients feel the warmth of radio frequency but not actual pain. In some areas, energy delivery may feel hotter than others.

Something that sets our Center for Aesthetic Surgery apart from other practices is our use of the ProNox® Nitrous Oxide Delivery System. Our patients appreciate the safety and efficacy of nitrous oxide as a mild sedative and enhancement for pain medication. What they appreciate even more is that they are in control of their sedation delivery. Speak with our staff about ProNox® for your Fractora treatment.

How many treatments will I need to see results?

Results begin to appear right away after Fractora treatment, though they will improve as tiny scabs flake off and swelling subsides. The number of treatments a patient needs depends on the extent of improvement they desire and the intensity of the energy delivered during the procedure. Most patients achieve a satisfactory outcome after 3 to 5 treatments.

Will my skin be sensitive after treatment?

Patients typically do not report encountering any pain after Fractora treatment, including sensitivity. However, post-treatment guidelines may include using Aquaphor for the first few days of tissue healing.

How soon after treatment? Can I wear makeup or be in the sun?

It may be possible to begin applying makeup after about one week, once the pin-point scabs have fallen off.

Sun protection is critical after Fractora treatment to prevent UV damage caused by sunlight. Patients are encouraged to wear a wide-brimmed hat and use appropriate sunscreen strictly during the first few weeks of healing. It is also important to note that UV exposure degrades collagen. Therefore, the best way to preserve the effects of this treatment is to maintain healthy sun habits.

Fractora Treatment Side Effects

Fractora treatment will result in substantial swelling that can last a few days. This side effect can be managed by applying cold compresses for 20-minute periods. Residual swelling may take up to two weeks to resolve. A grid-like pattern of tiny spots will also be noticeable after Fractora, caused by the pins on the handpiece. These typically crust and flake off over the course of approximately 5 days. During the initial week after treatment, the skin may also appear red or bronzed. Redness can linger for a few weeks but can usually be disguised with makeup.
