Difference Between Body Contouring and Weight Loss

Weight loss is an incredibly common goal for many. Some studies estimate that 45 million Americans go on a diet each year. While more than half of them are women, men struggle to maintain their weight as well. This helps explain why weight loss is such big business. Annually, we spend about $33 billion dollars on weight loss products. Sadly, many of these don’t work.  As a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon with extensive experience in body contouring procedures, I understand first-hand how frustrating losing weight can be which is why I spend considerable time during your initial consultation explaining the difference between body contouring and weight loss. Despite what you may think, procedures such as liposuction and CoolSculpting® are not going to really move the needle on your scale. What they will do is help restore proper body proportion. This, in turn, will make you look longer and leaner, and feel more vital and self-confident.

Goal of Body Contouring is to Deliver Harmony

The human eye is hardwired to interpret a body in harmony has being more attractive. By harmony, I mean that your upper and lower body are in proper proportion. Depending on your individual anatomy, this balance can be achieved in any number of ways. One of the simplest, and also a mainstay of my practice, is breast surgery. This includes:

  • Breast Augmentation
  • Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
  • Breast Reduction
  • Mastopexy Augmentation
  • Fat Grafting to the Breast
  • Gynecomastia or Male Breast Reduction

I often combine breast surgery with a liposculpture procedure. This allows me to literally re-sculpt your torso. The end result is a more youthful, and lighter looking you. However, the actual pounds that you can expect to lose are negligible.

Ideal Candidate for Body Contouring

The ideal candidate for a surgical body contouring procedure such as:

The best patient for these procedures is anyone in good health who is bothered by excess fat, loose skin and possibly loose muscle. These surgical procedures are the gold standard of body contouring as they give me the most access to truly sculpt your body into its ideal shape. However, they do require downtime, and not everyone wants to deal with this. Furthermore, not everyone needs a surgical procedure

The ideal candidate for a non-surgical body contouring procedure, such as CoolSculpting® or the minimally invasive Renuvion® procedure, is any man or woman in:

    • Good overall health
    • Within 10 lbs. of a maintainable goal weight
    • Relatively fit
    • Minimal skin laxity
    • Realistic expectations

Managing Expectations is a Critical Component to a Happy Result

My goal with any aesthetic procedure is a safe, exemplary outcome that delivers on your goals. I want you to be happy with your results. I know that I am really good at what I do. I also pride myself on always being upfront with you about what a procedure can and cannot achieve for your unique anatomy. No two people, not even twins, are created equal. This is why I am such as stickler about scheduling an in-person consultation. It is critical for helping you understand what to expect in terms of your results. I love social media, but it can create unrealistic hopes in terms of plastic surgery outcomes.

Managing expectations is a critical component to a happy result. This is true with surgical procedures, but it’s especially important with non-surgical procedures. The trade-off for little to no downtime is that your non-surgical body contouring results may be:

  • More subtle
  • Take time to be revealed
  • May require multiple treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart

So, if you find yourself frustrated by your reflection in the mirror, the way your clothes fit, or that stubborn roll around your middle, schedule an appointment to come in to discuss body contouring. It may not cause weight loss, but when your figure is in proportion, you will look leaner and feel more confident.
