Quick Guide to Liposuction

There are very few people who do not suffer from some degree of excess fat. Even thin, fit patients will come in to see me to discuss liposuction because they have developed pockets of fat, due to genetics or age, that distort their body contour. There is a reason why even the smallest amount of fat in the wrong place can be so troublesome. It all comes down to proportion. My goals with any body contouring procedure like liposuction is to restore harmony. The human eye perceives a body that is in proportion as being more attractive. And when you like what you see in the mirror, it gives you confidence, energy and a more positive attitude towards life. So, here’s my quick guide to liposuction.

Ideal Candidate for Liposuction

The ideal candidate for liposuction is any man or women in good overall health who is bothered by excess pockets of fat. It is important to keep in mind that the only fat that can be addressed with liposuction is what I like to call “grabable” fat. This means that you can pull the fat away from your body. The other kind of fat is visceral fat. It is located around your organs, and can only be addressed through lifestyle changes such as a healthful diet and regular exercise routine.

Most Common Liposuction Areas for Women & Men

One of the things that I like most about liposuction, other than the fact that it is extremely effective, is its versatility. I can treat almost any area of the body. The most common areas where I perform liposuction on women in my Long Island practice are the:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Back
  • Upper arms
  • Thighs

For men, the most popular liposuction treatment area is the abdomen and flanks, as these two work in conjunction, but I will also often address the chest in order to re-sculpt the entire torso. Furthermore, a smooth, flat chest is currently a highly desirable aesthetic for men.

Benefits of High Definition Liposuction

There are a number of different ways to perform liposuction. I prefer the
4-D Vaser/Pal Hi-Definition Liposuction technique. Often referred to as liposculpture, high definition liposuction allows me literally sculpt your anatomy into its ideal form. It even allows me to do precise etching for definition. Men tend to like this more than women as they often want those 6-pack abs, but it varies according to the patient’s desires and needs.

Removed Fat is “Liquid Gold”

The other great thing about liposuction is the fat that we remove is truly “liquid gold”. I will place it, via fat grafting, in other areas on your body to boost volume. In women, the most common body areas for fat grafting are the buttocks and the breasts while for men, it’s the buttocks and the pecs, although I will often place it into the deltoids as well. I always take a 360° approach with any liposuction procedure as all of the elements of your torso work together.

Liposuction Recovery & Results

I always recommend post liposuction massage for my patients as it helps get rid of swelling and speed up your recovery process so that you can get into that bathing suit much faster. If you are planning to get liposuction, keep in mind that it can take 4-6 months to see your final results. However, very good results, the kind that you will want to take to the beach, can be achieved in as little as 6-8 weeks.
