Surgical or Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation — Which is Right for You?

Many women are dissatisfied with look and/or function of their vagina. For some, it is a matter of genetics. For others, childbirth, hormones, and age may have exacted a toll on the delicate skin and tissues in this sensitive area. Luckily, today, there are options when it comes to vaginal rejuvenation. I am proud to offer my Long Island patients both surgical or non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation. But how do you which is right for you? Bottom line, you don’t. That’s my job, and why it is imperative to schedule an in-person consultation before pursing any aesthetic procedure.

Choosing the Right Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure for You

Whenever I am making a procedure recommendation, I always consider your:

  • Desired outcome
  • Anatomy
  • Needs
  • Lifestyle
  • Budget

Almost any patient who is given a choice between surgical or non-surgical is going to want the latter because it’s often faster, and doesn’t require an incision. But while I am a firm believer in giving my patients options, I will always be honest about what a procedure can and can not achieve. Many surgeons offer a non-surgical labiaplasty. As an early adopter, I have tried these devices, and I don’t think they deliver. This is why, in my practice, I offer my patients surgical vaginal rejuvenation with a surgical labiaplasty or non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation with Votiva.

Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation

Deciding between a surgical labiaplasty and Votiva is going to come down to your unique anatomy and needs. I want you to be happy with your results, and you won’t be if you get the wrong procedure. If your issue is excessive labia minora tissue where your inner lips extend beyond your outer lips causing pain, and discomfort during sex and/or making you feel so self conscious that you can’t enjoy yourself, you are probably going to be a better candidate for surgery. A surgical labiaplasty allows me to re-sculpt your labia so that they are more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable. However, this procedure does nothing to improve:

  • Loss of firmness in the vaginal canal
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mild stress incontinence

Votiva can address these issues. So, the right choice for you is going to come down to your primary concerns. Some women even decide to do both.

Votiva Uses RF Energy to Promote Collagen Production

As with many non-surgical firming procedures for the face, Votiva uses radiofrequency energy (RF) to safely heat up the skin and tissues of your vagina. The “injury” from the heat induces your body to ramp-up its collagen production. As collagen is basically your body’s fountain of youth, the end result is plumper, firmer and moister tissue in your vaginal canal.

One of the many benefits of Votiva is that it’s easy, not even requiring local anesthesia. However, it will take a series of 3 sessions to achieve your desired outcome, and your results will require some degree of maintenance. This means that in terms of budget, surgical vaginal rejuvenation and non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation may wind up costing the same. I like to be upfront with patients about this as many assume that the non-surgical route is going to be less expensive. I take my patients budgetary concerns seriously, but at the end of the day, you need to get the procedure that is going to make you look and feel fantastic.
