What Can Rhinoplasty Change About Your Nose and What Can’t It Change?

Young woman showing natural-looking results after rhinoplasty. Your nose plays a big role in how your facial features come together, so it’s natural to wonder how much of a difference rhinoplasty could actually make. While surgery can create meaningful changes, it also has realistic limits. Knowing both can help you head into your consultation with clearer expectations.

At Mark D. Epstein, MD, FACS, in Long Island, NY, Dr. Mark D. Epstein brings over 25 years of experience as a dual-board-certified plastic surgeon. He is supported by experienced board-certified anesthesiologists Dr. Adrienne Levy and Dr. Joanne Spaliaras, helping provide a high standard of surgical and anesthesia care.

What Can Rhinoplasty Change?

Rhinoplasty is highly versatile because several parts of the nose can be reshaped during surgery. Depending on your anatomy and goals, a nose job may:

  • Reduce or increase the overall size of your nose
  • Smooth a bump or depression along the bridge
  • Narrow the nasal bridge
  • Refine a wide, drooping, boxy, or upturned nasal tip
  • Reduce or reshape wide nostrils
  • Improve nasal asymmetry or deviation
  • Adjust the angle between your nose and upper lip

Rhinoplasty may also address structural concerns that interfere with breathing, such as a deviated septum.

The goal is not simply to make your nose smaller. Dr. Epstein considers how its shape and proportions relate to the rest of your facial features when planning surgery.

What Can’t Rhinoplasty Change?

Rhinoplasty can create meaningful improvements, but there are some things surgery cannot realistically change or guarantee:

  • Make Your Nose Look Exactly Like Someone Else’s: Your bone structure, cartilage, skin thickness, and facial features influence what can realistically be achieved.
  • Stop Natural Aging: Rhinoplasty results are generally long-lasting, but your nose and surrounding facial features can still change gradually with age.
  • Create Perfect Symmetry: Some degree of natural facial asymmetry is normal. Rhinoplasty can improve noticeable unevenness, but it cannot guarantee perfect symmetry.
  • Guarantee an Exact Result: Healing varies from person to person, so the outcome cannot be predicted down to every small detail.
