What is the MOTIVA implant?
Motiva is a round, smooth surface silicone gel implant developed by Establishment labs. It comes in two varieties: a round shaped implant and an Ergonomix implant which is round but assumes a teardrop shape when implanted into the breast.
How long have Motiva breast implants been available?
Since 2010 in other countries.
How many countries offer Motiva implants?
Over 80
How many patents for the technology?
Over 200
Are Motiva implants safe?
Yes, the safety profile of Motiva implants has been well established. The US Motiva FDA clinical trial is in its sixth year and the safety data is better than any other implant. Approval was given September 26. 2024.
What is so special about the Motiva implant?
All implants, both saline and silicone gel, have a silicone shell (bag). Silicone gel implants in general, look and feel far more natural than saline. However, silicone gel characteristics vary considerably from implant to implant. The gel in Motiva is the softest, most natural in feel while providing a beautiful, pleasing contour. The results are very stable over time, we have not seen any significant change in the breasts in our study from 1 to six years. The implants are the hardest to detect when palpating the breast, as they feel so much like natural breast tissue. The technology behind the Motiva implant is unique, which affords these very special characteristics.
What is unique about the surface of the implant?
The Motiva implant has a patented SmoothSilk®/SilkSurface, which reduces the risk for inflammatory conditions that could cause capsule contracture and other issues.
What is the difference between the Motiva Round and the Motiva Ergonomix implant?
The round implant is just that – round. The point of maximal forward projection is the center of the implant. This implant utilizes the ProgressiveGel®. The ergonomix implant is a teardrop shaped implant. However, unlike all previous teardrop shaped implants that have a rigid shape and require a textured surface to keep them from rotating and distorting breast shape, the ergonomix implant has a special, slightly softer UltimaGel® that flows towards the bottom of the implant. So, when the implant is flat on a table, it looks round, but when upright, as it lies in the breast, the bottom of the implant projects more, giving it a teardrop shape. Should the implant turn or spin within the breast pocket, as all smooth implants do, the implant simply readjusts its shape, and gravity guides the gel back into position!
Do Motiva implants have a tracking device? Can my personal information be obtained from the breast implant?
Motiva implants come with the option of having a Q-Inside® RFID sensor. This is NOT a tracking device. This is an FDA approved minute sensor that lies in the rear of the implant. Using an RFID reader held over the breast, the surgeon can verify the 15-digit Electronic Serial Number (ESN) that is linked to information about the implant, such as date of manufacture, size, and volume, providing 100% accurate information regarding the breast implant previously placed.
Why is the Motiva breast implant blue in color?
A silicone gel breast implant consists of a silicone shell, or bag that is filled with silicone gel. The shell is made by repeatedly dipping a mold, called a “mandrel” into silicone gel and allowing that to dry before dipping again. Typically, a silicone shell will consist of about five layers of silicone gel, each layer drying prior to reapplying another layer. When a Motiva implant shell is created, the third layer is a special blue dye silicone. This is called the “BluSeal®.” The purpose of this is so that the operating surgeon can visually inspect the implant prior to insertion into the patient. If there are any clear spots (no blue color), that is a sign that there is an issue with the implant shell and the device should not be used. This innovation is yet one more feature that Establishment labs has created to protect the patient.
What is else is unique to Motiva implants?
Motiva implants have a TrueMonobloc® design. This is where the shell and the gel contained therein move as a single unit. This ensures form stability (keeps its shape) while also enhancing durability and integrity of the device.
Do Motiva implants require a special incision?
No, Motiva implants can be placed using the same incisions as other conventional breast implants.
Are Motiva implants more costly than conventional implants?
In most cases, probably so, as they are a premium device. However, the extra value and benefit of the Motiva implant more than justifies the additional cost. Breast augmented with Motiva implants are more natural in both feel and appearance, maintain their shape better and are least likely to require reoperation in the coming years.
What is Dr. Epstein’s experience with Motiva Implants?
Dr. Epstein started using Motiva Round and Ergonomix breast implants when he was selected by Establishment labs to be one of only twenty two U.S. surgeons to participate in the US FDA Motiva Clinical Trial. He has performed dozens of breast augmentations with this device, including primary (first time breast augmentation) and secondary (revision breast augmentation) surgeries, including those with and without a simultaneous breast lift. Dr. Epstein specifically chose Motiva implants when he performed a complex breast implant revision on his spouse, Amy. Amy is just one of dozens of patients who are extremely satisfied with the results of their breast augmentation surgery with Motiva implants.
