Wondering how long you will feel sore after labiaplasty, when the swelling goes down, or when you can get back to your normal routine? Recovery happens gradually, and knowing what each week may bring can make planning for surgery much easier.
At Mark D. Epstein, MD, FACS, Plastic Surgery in Long Island, NY, dual board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein brings over 25 years of experience and works alongside experienced board-certified anesthesiologists Dr. Adrienne Levy and Dr. Joanne Spaliaras.
What Can You Expect During the First Week?
The first several days of labiaplasty recovery usually involve the most noticeable swelling and tenderness. Dr. Epstein uses long-acting local anesthetic to help reduce postoperative discomfort. You may also use a thick pad during the first few days, and your sutures will dissolve on their own.
You can shower as soon as you feel ready, including the day of surgery. Some women feel comfortable driving or returning to work or school the following day, although giving yourself time to rest can make recovery easier.
What Happens During Weeks 2 and 3?
Swelling should continue to improve as your tissues heal. You may feel increasingly comfortable with everyday activities, but the surgical area is still healing beneath the surface.
Dr. Epstein typically schedules follow-up visits during this period to check your progress and make sure your incisions are healing properly.
What Changes During Weeks 4 to 6?
By this stage, much of the initial swelling should have settled, although some residual swelling can remain. You may feel much closer to your routine.
You should still avoid activities that place pressure or friction on the healing tissue, including:
- Sexual intercourse
- Tampon use
- Bicycling
- Horseback riding
- Motorcycle riding
These activities are generally restricted until six weeks after surgery.
