Why GalaFLEX® Mesh is Worth the Money

Breast surgery is one of the cornerstones of my practice. As an expert in the field, I am constantly looking for the innovations and techniques that will deliver not only the best aesthetic result, but also one that will stand the test of time. Surgical mesh definitely falls into this category. I place the mesh within the inframammary fold or crease beneath your breast to provide added support. Over time, the mesh itself dissolves, and you are left with breast tissue that is 3-4 times stronger. While I have used a number of different internal scaffold support brands during my career, my current go-to is made by GalaFLEX®. It does, however, add additional cost to your procedure so here is why GalaFLEX® mesh is worth the money.

Breast Surgery Can Not Improve Breast Tissue
When you come in for your breast surgery consultation, I will perform a thorough physical exam. Yes, I am looking at the size and shape of your breasts, and whether or not there is any severe asymmetry. But I am also ascertaining the health of your breast tissue. With breast lift patients, in particular, the sagging in the breasts is due to the fact that the skin and tissues have stretched out and broken down due to:

  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Menopause
  • Weight gain/loss

Damaged tissue is inherently weak tissue. It lacks the firmness necessary to support the weight of your breasts and/or a breast implant. Sometimes, this damage is severe. So, while with a breast lift, I can lift the skin of your breasts and reshape your breast tissue to create a more favorable and youthful looking mound, the procedure can not heal compromised tissue.

How GalaFLEX® Works
This is why I will often add GalaFLEX® mesh to my breast lift and mastopexy augmentation procedures. However, I will also use it with certain breast augmentation patients for the same reason — particularly if you want a slightly bigger implant than I feel your tissue can support. GalaFLEX® is made from P4HB which breaks down into a naturally occurring substance in the body. As mentioned, I place the mesh along the lower edge of your breasts from one side to the other. The body’s response to this “injury” is to produce scar tissue that weaves in and out of the mesh itself. With time, the mesh melts, and your are left with an internal scaffold of support.

Basically, we are bioengineering a new layer of tissue. Furthermore, this new tissue is 3-4 times stronger than your native breast tissue. And this is why GalaFLEX® mesh is worth the money. My goal with any procedure is to create a beautiful looking result. But I also want your result to be long-lasting. GalaFLEX® mesh is truly one of those upfront costs that pays for itself over time.
