Preservé Surgeon Training with Dr. Mark D. Epstein

Medically reviewed by Mark D. Epstein, MD, FACS on July 8, 2026

Dr. Mark D. Epstein has trained 58 plastic surgeons in the Preservé breast augmentation technique as of July 2026, making him one of the most active Preservé surgeon educators in the United States. Surgeons travel from across the country to his Hauppauge, New York facility for a structured training program that combines classroom instruction with observation of live Preservé procedures in his operating room.

Dr. Epstein's training role is built on unusual depth of experience: he was one of 22 Principal Investigators in the FDA clinical trial that led to approval of Motiva breast implants in September 2024, enrolling 73 patients, the highest of any investigator. He was among the first 36 U.S. surgeons trained in Preservé and has performed 165 Preservé procedures as of July 2026, one of the highest volumes in the country.

Who trains plastic surgeons on the Preservé technique?

Preservé training in the United States is conducted by a small group of experienced surgeons selected by Establishment Labs, the developer of the technique. Dr. Epstein is one of these designated trainers. Trainers are chosen based on surgical skill with the technique, consistent outcomes, high case volume, and the ability to teach effectively.

What does the training program include?

Visiting surgeons complete a structured program with two components. The didactic portion covers patient selection and candidacy, surgical planning, implant selection and sizing, instrumentation, tissue-preserving principles, and the clinical evidence base behind Preservé. The observational portion places visiting surgeons in Dr. Epstein's operating suite to watch live Preservé procedures, including use of the Epstein Breast Preservation Channel Dilator, the instrument Dr. Epstein designed to allow atraumatic introduction of the implant through the small Preservé incision. Surgeons leave with a practical roadmap for integrating Preservé into their own practices, including recovery protocols and postoperative care.

Where do visiting surgeons come from?

Surgeons have traveled to Hauppauge from across the United States to complete the program.

Why does surgeon training matter for patients?

A surgeon who teaches a technique to other surgeons must understand it at a deeper level than someone who only performs it. Dr. Epstein's patients benefit from that same depth: refined technique, careful patient selection, and instrumentation developed from direct experience with 165 procedures. Training also raises the standard of Preservé surgery nationally, since every trained surgeon carries these methods to their own patients.
